HASHOO FOUNDATION AT THE CLINTON GLOBAL INITIATIVE (CGI) 2009

Hillary R. Clinton, United States Secretary of State Addresses the Audience with Her Plans for Women in Agricultural Development.

Dear Friends of the Hashoo Foundation:
Hashoo Foundation (HF) participated in the fifth annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) held in New York. We met with leaders in business, government, and the civil sector to exchange best practices to garner support to help HF expand its Women Empowerment through Honey Bee Farming Commitment in the remote and mountainous Northern Areas to other areas across Pakistan.  Originally aiming to reach 50 women, in the span of two years, this Commitment has exceeded its target, training and engaging 316 women in honey bee production with a direct impact on  more than 1200 dependants.

Along with its Women Empowerment through Honey Bee Farming (2007-2009), Hashoo Foundation is engaged in the direct delivery of three additional CGI Commitments to Action, Hotel Management and Life Skills Training Program (2008-2009)Umeed-e-Noor Center of Excellence for Special Children (2006-2009), and Expectation Graduation Room Pilot Project (2009).  These projects are tremendously impacting and improving the lives of thousands of women, girls and their families through skills training, economic development and microcredit; providing support to former dropout students; education and rehabilitation to young people with special needs; and emergency relief programs.

One main focus at this year’s CGI event was the importance of empowering women and investing in girls. It was truly encouraging to hear Hillary R. Clinton, United States Secretary of State during the closing plenary session addressing the audience with her plans for women in agricultural development. She expressed “We will also put women at the heart of our efforts. We have seen again and again in microfinance and other programs that women are micro entrepreneurial, accountable and practical.  They invest their earning directly in their families and communities and they pay back loans at a higher rate than is the norm. So, women are a wise investment and since the majority of the world’s farmers are women it is critical that our investment in agriculture leverage their ambition and perseverance".

Women represent 40 to 80 percent of farmers in the developing world. We are hopeful that some of this technical and financial support will be allocated to local non-governmental organizations working with women that have demonstrated experience in delivering services in agricultural trades, such as our honey bee farming project in developing countries like Pakistan.

We are excited to share with you the success of our Women Empowerment through Honey Bee Farming Commitment and how the honey bee farming has impacted women’s lives in Northern Pakistan. Please see press release below on Farida Bano’s story and how the honey she produces in being served on the tables of 5-star hotels in Pakistan!

Thank you  for your interest and continued support of our programs. Together we make a difference!

Sincerely,

Cristal Montañéz Baylor
