SARAH HASHWANI'S VISION

A memorable moment.- July 2007. During a honey tasting at the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad, Sarah Hashwani, Chairperson of Hashoo Foundation, announced that the Marriott and Pearl Continental Hotels in Pakistan committed to buy the honey produced by the beekeepers in Northern Pakistan. The hotels agreed to discontinue the contracts with their current honey suppliers. Additionally, the hotels incorporated the Women Empowerment through Honey Bee Farming project under their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program and committed to buy the honey produce by the women and pay a premium above market price with the provision that the women invest the extra income in their girls and boys quality education, better nutrition and health.

Hashoo Foundation's project Women Empowerment through Honey Bee Farming “Plan Bee” is the winner of the World Challenge 08 competition sponsored by BBC World News and Newsweek magazine in association with Shell. Realizing Ms. Sarah Hashwani’s vision, this project has grown substantially since its inception three years ago.

So far, the project has trained and facilitated the processing, packaging, transporting, and selling honey of 512 women beekeepers and their honey in the lucrative 5-star hotels market. The project has impacted more than 4,000 dependents and produced more than 20 tons of honey. According to Census organization of Pakistan the average family size exceeds 8 members per family.

MERGER OF HOAP FOUNDATION AND UMEED-E-NOOR INTO THE HASHOO FOUNDATION

Philanthropy has been a part of the Hashoo family for six generations. It is with immense joy that in this generation, we have formally institutionalized our service to humanity. Moving forward, we have decided on having a strong family foundation which will focus on economic self-sustenance and poverty alleviation.
We are pleased to announce the merger of HOAP Foundation and Umeed-e-Noor into the Hashoo Foundation. As of July 1, 2007 all three organizations are under the single umbrella of Hashoo Foundation. By creating one entity, we have aligned our goals and pooled our resources. To date, all three foundations have been successful in achieving their goals.
Under the Hashoo Foundation, this success will continue, without any change in personnel, programs or commitments. Ms. Sarah Hashwani will be heading the Foundation as Chairperson and Dr. Imam Yar Baig has graciously accepted the role of Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Baig comes to Hashoo Foundation with a wealth of knowledge, experience and service in the social and development services.
